Arkansas City, KS - Administrators at South Central Kansas Medical Center knew they had partnered with someone special when Dr. Perry Lin was hired as Ark City's first full-time obstetrics and gynecological care specialist. However, even they did not realize how elite his training and experience had been.
Through his 19 years of practice Dr. Lin estimates he has delivered close to 2,000 babies, many considered to be "high risk" pregnancies.
"My approach is to provide information so a patient has an understanding of the situation and then help her make the best possible decision for herself and for her baby's benefit," Dr. Lin said. "I feel it is a great privilege to help bring a new human being safely into the world by simply doing a job I enjoy."
In addition to standard OB-GYN care, Dr. Lin also has a subspecialty in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.
"Reproductive endocrinologists are best known for running 'test tube baby' or IVF centers, but that is only a small part for which we are trained to do. My subspecialty provided me with extra training in laparoscopic surgery, plus I gained extensive experience in managing infertility issues and in women's endocrinology," Dr. Lin said.
The subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility required two additional years of training beyond the standard eight to nine years normally spent in medical school and residency programs. The additional training qualifies Dr. Lin to act as a consultant to other OB-GYN physicians regarding reproductive endocrinology and infertility issues.
Following his subspecialty training, Dr. Lin achieved board certification by successfully passing an extensive set of written and oral exams, and is recognized as a fellow of the American college of Surgeons and of the American College of OB/GYN.
"The overall process is extremely demanding, and there are less than one-thousand active American Board certified subspecialists in reproductive endocrinology and infertility in the world. I am very privileged to be one of them," Dr. Lin said.
Board certification ensures the minimal criteria of competence for the physician to function as a specialist.
"In my opinion, the single most important thing a patient should ask is the physician's current board-certification status. Non-board certified physicians cannot claim to be board-certified. Nevertheless this occurs frequently or is mistakenly assumed by patients," Dr. Lin said.
Dr. Lin provides a full range of obstetrical and gynecological services, including consultations to assist with issues related to infertility. He is now accepting new patients to be seen through the medical center's specialty clinic, and also delivers newborns and performs women's health related surgeries through the hospital.
Steve Perkins, SCKMC's CEO, believes that Dr. Lin's knowledge and experience is a great asset for this area.
"We were excited when we added Dr. Lin to our staff. He has demonstrated his outstanding skills and experience in the relatively short time he has been here. He is capable of providing care that in the past has been available only in Wichita or another large medical community. We appreciate him being a part of our team," Perkins said.
Appointments may be made for his clinic by calling the SCKMC specialty clinic at 441- 5711. Referrals are not required for most insurance, but may vary depending on individual plans. Dr. Lin will also work with area physicians to accept referrals of patients needing specialized care.
