South Central Kansas Medical Center held its annual “Years of Service” luncheon on Wednesday, May 13th as part of the medical center’s National Hospital Week celebration. National Hospital Week is considered to be the nation’s largest healthcare event, celebrating the efforts of the hospital team and the care they provide.

SCKMC’s service luncheon is an invitation only event held for individuals within the organization who have provided dedicated service in their field. The event is attended by honorees from all departments, as well as team leaders and hospital administration.

SCKMC’s Chief Executive Officer, Virgil Watson, addressed those in attendance.

“All hospitals have the same things, as far as equipment, buildings, vehicles, and computers. The thing that they don’t have is the same people,” Watson said. “What makes us unique is that we have unique skills, talents, and abilities that our people bring to us. As Webster Russell (former Ark City Memorial Hospital CEO) used to emphasize every time he would talk to an employee group, what makes us unique is us.”

Honorees are presented with achievement pins by their department manager commemorating the number years they have been employed at the medical center.

The following members were recognized for five-years of service: Shelly Mathews, Med/Surg; Dena Van Nostrand, Med/Surg; Kasey Thrailkill, Surgery; Shaylee Jagels, Obstetrics; Jeff Jenkins, Information Technology; Kristi Welliver, Surgery.

The following members were recognized for ten-years of service: Lacy Colquhoun, Surgery; Susan Fisher, Referral Clinic; Lola Martin, Admissions; Steve McKinney, Physical Therapy; Sandra Bruster, Med/Surg.

Robin Goode, Business Services, was recognized for fifteen years of service. Violy Knowles, Medical / Surgical Unit, was recognized for twenty-years of service. Lois Faber, Laboratory, was recognized for twenty-five years of service. And Pattie Brown, Physical Therapy, received a special diamond recognition pin for thirty-years of service.

Watson has worked with Brown throughout his career, and praised her for her efforts.

“Pattie Brown has given an extensive amount of time to South Central Kansas Medical Center. I knew her before I was re-employed by the hospital. She has been the same throughout her entire thirty-years, calm, cool, collected, very talented and skilled physical therapist. And her patients love her,” Watson said.

Altogether, one hundred-seventy years of experience was celebrated during the luncheon.

“The level of commitment shown by our staff is truly amazing,” said Clayton Pappan, SCKMC’s Chief Marketing Officer. “To have individuals dedicated to one facility, serving others for fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, and even thirty years is almost unheard of this day and age. Words cannot express how grateful we are to have all of you.”
